Tackling the Albright Knot

The Albright knot is the right solution if you are attempting to join two pieces of filament together that have different diameters. In fact, this knot is often used to join braided line unbraided filament together. The Albright knot when properly constructed is the best method of ensuring that these two unequal sized lines stay firmly attached.  The Albright is simple to create and with a bit of practice you can master the technique.

There are four simple steps to successfully creating an Albright knot they are:

1. Once you have located the ends of the two pieces of line you wish to join, create a loop from the thickest piece of line. This loop will resemble the eye of a needle, and this is a good analogy since you will be threading the thinner line through this.

2. Holding the loop between your left forefinger and thumb, carefully insert the thinner filament into the loop that you created.  Make sure that you hold the loop tightly to avoid slipping and carefully wrap the lighter line around the base approximately 10 times. When you are done this piece may resemble a classic hangman’s noose.

3.  To ensure that the Albright knot is strong, you must thread the smaller line back through the loop in exactly the direction that you originally threaded it.  This step cannot be overlooked, as without it your Albright knot will not perform properly.

4. The final step is to moisten your knot with water (or saliva if you are not near water) and tug on the two ends.  Make sure that the knot pulls tightly as this will add even more strength.  Now you can trim the excess ends. Your Albright knot is now ready to add to your reel.

One word of caution as you wrap your line – you will get a far stronger knot if you wrap your line neatly.  The neater it is, the easier it will be to strengthen.  All too often, beginners will create an Albright knot and will try to rush through the process. This is problematic and although you may still get satisfactory results, your knot may get caught in guides or in your reel which could present quite a problem when you are fishing.  A neat knot will simply glide through your reel and guide as if it were no more than a mild kink in your line.  Remember, the smoothness of the knot design is one of the primary components of the Albright knot.  You may even consider a drop of super glue added to the ends of each piece of filament to prevent the ends from fraying on your reel or catching in your guides.

If you are interested in experimenting with the Albright knot, you can do so by creating a crisscross design.  This is done simply by winding the line five times in a downward motion then reversing and coming back up five times to create the crisscross.  This method creates an even stronger Albright knot and the overall results will be more eye appealing. While eye appeal isn’t more critical than strength, it can’t hurt.

Information on Black Sea Bass

Along the western waters of the North Atlantic Ocean you’ll find the black sea bass which is also known as the rock bass. They can typically be found as far south as the Gulf of Mexico and as far North as Massachusetts.  The most populous areas for these fish are between New York and South Caroline where they can be found in shoreline waters. While they do tend to stick fairly close to shore, it’s not unusual to find them in as much as 400 feet of water or more.

Easily recognizable the black sea bass has a long dorsal fin. This is different than other bass that typically have two dorsal fins. The black sea bass has the ability to blend in well with their environment given that their color will change to mimic it. They are mainly black however as indicated by their names.  Scientifically they are called “Centropristis Straita”. This ability typically gives them the advantage when ambushing prey.

An interesting characteristic of the black sea bass is their ability to change from female to male halfway through their lives.  All black sea bass are hermaphrodites – the larger males are also called “humpbacks” due to the bumps that appear on their heads.  This fish reproduces very quickly, between May and June with tiny eggs – not more than 1/3 of an inch.  The eggs float and only take about a day and a half to hatch.

Rock Bass, the more common name for Black Sea Bass are generally small, weighing only about a pound and a half. Occasionally, you may find that they can grow as large as nine pounds.  During breeding cycles, you’ll find Black Sea Bass near the shorelines but once breeding time ends you will find them in depths as much as 400 feet.  Rock Bass are fairly slow and they typically make their homes in sheltered areas like wrecks, reefs and rocks.  If you see a rock bass on the ocean floor you might be surprised to find that they are not dead in spite of the fact they look like they are.

Black bass are a great game fish, if the proper techniques are used to land them. Typically, more success is obtained by boat fishing close to shore though shoreline and pier fishing are not quite as successful.  Bottom fishing can also be a good way to land these fish but it does take some patience, as they are not known for moving quickly.

Black Sea Bass prefer jigs or live bait.  They also are liable to strike if you are using shrimp, squids, worms, crabs or small fish. In spite of the fact that they tend to be a bit slow, they are pretty aggressive once you hook them.  While they are slow, once they’re hooked they will come to life very quickly. Make sure your line and leader are in good condition to catch Black Sea Bass.

There are many myths that surround using live bait instead of artificial and most of them are not true. Live bait is still used by many anglers. You may need to adjust your thinking and practices when the summer months hit. Keeping the bait alive will be the hardest obstacle for any angler in the summer. In order to keep your bait living, you will need to change out the water regularly so that the oxygen can keep flowing through to the bait. However, you can™t just stop at changing out the water.

The temperature of the water is crucial because the water on the surface is hot and deadly for living bait. Therefore, having ice on hand to put into the live well will be the most beneficial way of keeping your live bait happy until they reach the hook. There is also a bait shortage during the summer months on things like shrimp and live croaker. You will save yourself a lot of time if you call the bait shop the night before to ensure that the bait you want is available. The shrimp are the most common bait in the summertime, but they are not as effective as you may think. When everyone is using shrimp, the fish are not as excited by them because they see them everywhere. Try using a baitfish that is not as often used in the summer months and guarantee a better chance of catching a fish.

Some other tips you should keep in mind when fishing with live bait is to never hook your live bait in the eyes. The reason is that you want the bait to see the fish approach them because they will become more excited and it will cause the fish to latch on better.
